Assalam Alaikoum/ Peace be upon you
Preamble:
Nyankanda is a refugee camp found in Butezi commune of Ruyingi province in the eastern part of Burundi. The camp’s current population data is over 25,000, as for January 2026. The camp has a good number of active Muslims, and the number keeps growing drastically. To provide a safe place for Islamic practices, we are in the process of constructing our own mosque where worship and other Islamic activities will take place. Therefore, we are directing our request for support to individual well-wishers and organizations to help us finish this project.
Developmental:
As it has been always a practice whereby mosque is built based on the local community need, we managed to start with a small prayer room some years back and eventually evolved into Mosque. However, as yeas went on, the demand raised as well because the number of people was also increasing. So, we gathered as Muslims and agreed on how we can expand our mosque as it is a vital place for spiritual solace. We did some local contributions within and came up with some amounts that enabled us to start up a construction of a new Mosque.
Objectives:
Our primary objective why we made this decision is because we find a Mosque enhancing community cohesion and bringing a sense of practical support in area of extreme need. For this reason and desire, we did not wait but quickly went on to look for a clean and comfortable place whereas Muslims we can be gathering for worship. This building aims to provide a sense of normalcy, dignity and psychological comfort to the Islamic displaced populations, it will often function as a hub for education, social services and psychosocial support for trauma survivors by JustGiving, JustGiving, JustGiving.
Apart from the above, the key objective of this building includes providing space for daily worshiping and Islamic community gathering. Mosques offer a dedicated, dignified, and safe space for refugees who often live in cramped, temporary shelters to perform daily prayers, Friday congregation and Ramadhan services (Taraweeh) which fosters community and psychological healing. Mosque creates a gathering place that strengthens bond, offers emotional support, and helps maintaining a sense of community identity and routine amid hardship.
Way forward:
With the little local contributions that we made, we managed to build halfway and we could not finish. Pictures attached explains the level we reached. We have remained with the work of beam filling, plastering, floor casting, painting, glasses, sealing, scaffolds, electrifying and water, etc. and labor. The finishing of this Mosque will serve us much good.
This mosque will be serving as a Centre for providing Islamic education and youth support. Mosque in refugee camps act as educational Centers, madrasas for children and youths- offering Quran memorization classes and teaching Islamic values. Serving as a hub for social services such as facilitating the distribution of Zakat (charity) and Sadaqah, providing aid to poor and sometimes even offering water from attached boreholes or hosting educational activities for women and children, and creating a “Sadaqah Jariyah” (ongoing charity).
Need:
Our plea and encouragement are that; donating for building or finishing a Mosque in refugee camp is a form of Sadaqah Jariyah- that provide a lasting legacy and spiritual reward for as long as the mosque serves the community. These projects are often undertaken by humanitarian organizations to ensure that refugees even in the direst circumstances have access to their religious practices and a focal point for social life.
We therefore ask from each Muslim- well-wishers and organizations to give us a hand of support with funds or contributions in order to finish up the construction of this Mosque which will serve us for spiritual growth. Below is the budget of all the remaining requirements.

Conclusion: Above is the quotation sincerely made to make sure the Mosque is finished. We shall really be thankful with your support as it is said in Islam, “contributing money to the construction or maintenance of a mosque is considered a highly virtuous act, frequently described as a form of Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing, continuous charity). Allah promises immense rewards in the Hereafter for those who spend their wealth for this purpose, with the primary reward being a house in paradise.”
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him a house like it in Paradise.”
This is our joy and we look forward to receiving your support. Thank you.
